The world of medicine is expanding, and a lot of what used to be considered "alternative" medicine is becoming more mainstream. For instance, it is now quite easy to find naturopathic doctors — physicians who prefer to treat patients using natural, herbal medicines and a lifestyle approach. A naturopath may, indeed, be the right practitioner for you to see, but every naturopath has a slightly different approach and something a little different to offer. Here are some questions to ask a naturopath to determine whether they're a good fit.

Do they ever prescribe drugs?

Some naturopaths take an approach by which they recommend natural remedies first but also give prescription medications when needed. Others only use natural methods and never prescribe drugs. Ask the naturopath about their approach in this regard. If you also seek to avoid prescriptions and don't see yourself going that route for any reason, then a naturopath who rarely, if ever, prescribes may be a good fit. On the other hand, if you are someone who needs a prescription or has a difficult-to-treat problem, you may want a naturopath who takes a more complementary approach and prescribes meds in some cases.

What areas do they specialize in?

Like conventional medical doctors, naturopaths have different specialties. Some specialize in infectious diseases. Others specialize in pediatrics, cardiovascular health, or dermatology. Naturopaths tend to be flexible in that they also offer basic health care outside of their immediate specialty. However, if you have a specific health condition you're seeking care for, you probably want a naturopath who has specialty experience in that field. For example, if you're seeking care for a skin condition, a naturopath who has specialized in dermatology is a great one to see.

What diagnostic tools do they use?

Some naturopaths use more conventional diagnostic tools, such as blood tests and imaging. Others use alternative tools, like energy field readings. Know what you are comfortable with. If you have a more complex medical condition, a naturopath who uses more extensive diagnostics is often preferable. On the other hand, if you have already tried and failed with that approach, you may want to seek out someone who uses alternative diagnostics.

Every naturopath is a bit different. Some take a more conventional approach, while others depart further from mainstream medicine. if you ask questions early on, you can get a better idea as to whether a certain practitioner will meet your needs.
